The Pelham Country Club had its origins as a small tennis club and five hole golf course carved out of a cow pasture in 1908.
In the summer of 1921 an influential member named Mont Rogers formed a company to buy the land and hired noted golf architect, Devereux Emmet, to create a championship golf course. Cut from virgin woodland, stretching around and over rolling, low-lying hills, Pelham's golf course opens up varying vistas of great beauty. The natural beauty of its setting is comparable only to an old English park, and it is difficult to believe its proximity to New York City. The golf course is known in the Metropolitan golf community for it’s condition and spectacular green complexes. The club has added a world class short game area (19th
Hole) just east of the 1st
tee. It was designed by architect Mike Devries, who is currently working with the club on a master plan for the golf course.
James M. 'Long Jim' Barnes was engaged as golf professional on a three-year contract. He promptly obliged by winning the United States Open Golf Championship at Columbia Country Club, Washington, D. C. and Pelham Country Club enjoyed wide publicity with a U. S. Open Champion as its Golf Professional. The trophy which was presented by President Warren G. Harding was displayed at the Pelham Club for the first year of Barnes' association with the club.
In Sept. 1923, the PGA Championship was played at Pelham Country Club with golf's most prominent players participating. Gene Sarazen and Walter Hagan stole the show, when they finished even-up in the thirty-six hole final, and went on to extra holes. Gene Sarazen prevailed on the thirty-eight hole to win one of golf's major championships.
Mike Diffley has been the Head Golf Professional at the Pelham Country Club since 1988. He was 2013 Metropolitan Teacher of the Year as well as a past Metropolitan Open Champion. He is a graduate of St. John’s University, where he is the only golfer selected to be in the Athletic Hall of Fame.
Jeff Wentworth has been the Greens Superintendent since 1995 and has brought the course to a level unsurpassed in the Met area. The conditions on a daily basis are wonderful and the enhancement of the beauty of our unique piece of land seems to get better every year.
